Summer 2022 ProPrint Group Packaging update for Fresh Produce Customers...

The Team...

ProPrint Group continues to be an approved printer for Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, COOP, Ocado, Asda, Lidl, Aldi, Safeway and Booths. Our accounts handling team can quickly work with retailer artwork houses and dedicated studio team. Together they expedite label and packaging artworks to obtain correct approvals quickly and accurately, even in a matter of 2-3 days.

ProPrint Group has strengthened our team for this year to make sure we are always there for customers. This year, experienced Produce Account Manager Jordan Lilley joins Sharne and Amanda. The account handling team are further supported by the team on site at our new customer service hub site.

Experience of the industry is key. We know those customers we work with in Fresh Produce spend time away from their families in the summer. Outstanding fresh fruit and vegetables can require long working hours from early mornings into late evenings. Our own team has to have the same work ethic. If an urgent requirement lands at 6am or 9pm, it needs an answer - quickly.

Planning & Forecasting...

Material availability issues continued to intensify since January, with the Paperworkers’ Union extending strike action to April. Transport is also affected with the International Road Transport Union citing that around a fifth of all trucking jobs remain vacant, despite an increase in wages. We hope that negotiations will progress to a resolution in April and will continue to work together with customers to manage the interim impact.

ProPrint Group has been able to prepare healthy label material stocks, with the flexibility to work alongside a selection of material suppliers. As a result our team is uniquely positioned to help with orders where delivery may have been delayed or failed as a result of such supply chain pressures.

An update from ProPrint Group Director James Denny...
"To mitigate the impact of the current material crisis, as the paper mill strike continues in Finland for a 4th month, it is vital for customers to communicate as early as possible on label requirements for the 2022 season. Cost increases are of course a threat in the label market at the moment, nonetheless - material availability even more so.  We are experiencing delays on committed orders and some specialist products are just not available.  Worrying times for all UK Printers.
To give you a comparison of material costs; they have nearly double in the last 6 months. As availability decreases, costs will continue to rise. ProPrint Group are already working to absorb cost increases as best we can. Collecting forecasts as early as possible is key, in order to optimise production runs for this purpose. ProPrint Group are currently managing paper supply with increased stock holding from the start of the year. Despite this, we must monitor the situation and manage carefully in partnership with customers.  Customers can really help by arming us with any advance information on requirements to ProPrint Group account managers. As always we will work in partnership with our loyal customers to ensure we get through this together.
Label and Packaging Options...

There are significant changes for plastic use within Fresh Produce already happening. This includes the new UK Plastic tax, effective April 2022. The law will apply to plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported into the UK, that does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. Since New Year’s day, France has already banned plastic packaging on a range of fruit and vegetables. Spain is due to implement its own plastic ban in 2023.

Paper labelling and carton-board options will offer alternative recyclable options. Our Pro-Produce Pack can also leverage technology to increase the simplicity and efficiency of production.

The Pro-Produce Pack...

The Pro-Produce pack offers plastic elimination, full recyclability and automation. It is currently being implemented across a range of products for various retailers, including: Kiwi, Apples, Pears, Lemons, Oranges, Passionfruit, Pomegranate, Plums, Cherries, Tomatoes and Avocados.

100% Recyclable Fruit Tags

Fully recyclable wineglass style fruit tags have helped to eliminate 17,500 square metres of plastic annually for one of our ProPrint customers.

The custom printed tags are delivered on a standard 5-working day lead-time, or more quickly if required.
